Standard Exempt license plates are issued to vehicles owned by government entities, counties, cities, or other state political subdivisions. Vehicles with Standard Exempt license plates have the word “EXEMPT” printed on the plate. As a result of “Two Steps, One Sticker,” these vehicles now receive a registration sticker as proof of inspection. A registration renewal notice will be mailed prior to the vehicle’s inspection expiration. An inspection fee based on the last inspection is printed on the renewal notice.

There are two steps to follow under “Two Steps, One Sticker”:

• Step 1: Pass a vehicle inspection within 90 days of your registration expiration date. To find your nearest inspection station, please visit the DPS website.
• Step 2: Once a renewal notice is received, pay the applicable inspection fee online, by mail, in person at your county tax office, at any county willing to accept the application, or at a subcontractor location such as a participating grocery store or municipal office. A registration sticker will be issued once the inspection fee is paid and the passing inspection status is verified.
